Here are some quotes, charts, and data breaking down political ad spend:

"Spending on political advertisements is projected to hit a new high in 2020, surging $3.6 billion above the most recent presidential campaign year," the Wall Street Journal recently reported.

"Political ad spending will total $9.9 billion in 2020, according to the latest U.S. advertising forecast from WPP PLC's ad-buying unit GroupM. That would be up from $8.7 billion in 2018 when midterm congressional elections were held, and from $6.3 billion in 2016 when President Trump was elected."

The WSJ reports that growth between presidential campaign years is increasing, with political ad spending going up by $2 billion between 2012 and 2016, and by $1.1 billion between 2008 and 2012. Political spending in 2018 accounted for 2% of total digital ad spending in the U.S. ($2 billion), and in 2020, digital political advertising spend is projected to rise to about $2.8 billion, or 2.2% of total digital ad spending, according to GroupM.

Total ad spending is projected to increase by 4% in 2020, compared with projected growth of 5.3% for 2019.

Here are some key insights:

  • 78% of U.S. adults learn about the presidential election through T.V.
  • 65% of U.S. adults turn to digital channels to gather information about the election.
  • 41% of U.S. internet users think they see too many political ads on T.V.
  • 43% of U.S. registered voters search for more information about a candidate after viewing a digital advertisement.

The Future of Political Advertising:

It’s Going Digital

"We are now living in a digital advertising world, digital campaigns in the politics industry lagged far behind in 2018, but if 2018 taught you anything, it’s that there is a new age. Embrace it early and win, or wait until your next election and embrace it then.

U.S. Senate campaigns spent only 4%-7% of their massive media budgets on digital media, while Trump spent 44% and commercial companies spend 54% - Are you feeling us?

Facebook ad click-through-rate for users 55+ was a full 2-3x higher than for those under 55. The idea that "my district is older" is not a good reason to skip digital investment for campaigns. The 2020 Presidential race is well underway, and Trump has spent more than all other candidates combined.
